Birmingham Roeper swept Detroit Academy of the Americas 3-0 to win the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 4, District 123 volleyball championship on Thursday, Nov. 7, at the Roeper Community Center in Bloomfield Hills.
Roeper won the match 25-9, 25-15, and 25-7.
It is Roeper’s first district volleyball championship since 2011 and the first title for third-year head coach Emma Hegel.
Junior Jada Coburn led Roeper in kills on Thursday against the Academy of the Americas and freshman Irena Thomas dominated from the service line with eight aces. Senior setter Veronica Lyon was stellar in controlling the Roughrider offensive attack.
Roeper swept Warren Michigan Math & Science 3-0 and the Academy of
the Americas beat Southfield Manoogian 3-1 in the semifinals.
The Academy of the Americas finishes a strong season for a school in only its third year of existence. It is a Spanish dual-language high school that will be graduating its first senior class ever. It finished 5-2 in the Detroit Public School League East Division.
Roeper advances to the regional round where they will face the winner of the District 124 championship. New Haven and Marine City Cardinal Mooney face off for the title on Friday, Nov. 8.
