Birmingham Roeper players celebrate after winning a point against Warren Michigan Math & Science on Wednesday.

   Birmingham Roeper swept Warren Michigan Math & Science 3-0 in its Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 4, District 123 volleyball semifinal on Wednesday, Nov. 6, at Roeper.

   Roeper won the match 26-24, 25-12, and 25-16.

   The first set was a back-and-forth affair and Roeper was down 23-24 with the Cougars serving for the set. Roeper senior Veronica Lyon’s block tied the score at 24-24. Lyon then served two straight aces to give the Roughriders the first set, 26-24.

   Roeper cruised in the second set as junior Sydney Levy’s strong serving

 

 

 

lifted the Roughriders to a 6-0 lead with two aces. Levy added five more service points and two more aces in the set. Sophomore Scarlett Shaya had two kills, and freshman Irena Thomas, junior Jada Coburn, senior Emma Wine, freshman Ava Thomas, and Lyon added kills in the set.

   Irena Thomas’ kill put Roeper up 18-16 in the final set. She then closed out the match with six straight service points and four aces.

   Roeper advances to the district final on Thursday, Nov. 7, against Detroit Academy of the Americas. Americas beat Southfield Manoogian 3-1 in its semifinal.
