Pontiac Notre Dame Preparatory players celebrate with their MHSAA district championship trophy on Thursday.

   Defending Michigan High School Athletic Association Class B volleyball champion Pontiac Notre Dame Preparatory rolled to its 12th straight district championship, beating Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood 3-0 on Thursday, Nov. 1, at Ortonville Brandon.

   Notre Dame Prep, ranked second in Division 2, won 25-10, 25-11, and 25-9. It was the Irish’s 21st district title in the school’s 25-year history.

   A trio of seniors, Miss Volleyball finalists Maddy Chinn and Natalie Risi and Maria Famularo, led the Irish. Chinn hit at a .500 pace, collecting six kills and added three blocks, five service points and seven digs. Risi scored five from the line, and had nine kills, and six digs.  Famularo was lights out from the service line, scoring a match-high 20 points including 10 aces, she also dished out 19 assists and had four kills and nine digs.

 

 

The Notre Dame Prep senior class also set a pair of records that will be challenging to break in the future.  They are to only NDP class to record two 60-win seasons (64 in 2017 and 60 currently in 2018). They also won their 222nd match in their careers.

   While the seniors were leading the way, the young Irish players also had strong performances against the Cranes. Freshman attacker/setter Aly Borellis dished out 10 assists, had a match high 10 kills, scored seven from the service line with two aces and had six digs.  Sophomore Olivia Kowalkowski scored seven with three aces and a game high 12 digs.  Junior Emily Mohr added four kills, two blocks and a pair of digs.

   The Irish now advance to the Region 16 tournament on their home court on Tuesday, Nov. 6, where they will  face Marysville.
