   Detroit Renaissance downed rival Detroit Cass Technical 3-1 in a two-and-a-half-hour marathon match to earn the Detroit Public School League volleyball championship on Thursday, Oct. 29, at Renaissance.

   The win ended Cass Tech’s three-year reign with the title.

   Renaissance improved to 18-2 with the victory.

   Cass Tech won a hard-fought first set, 27-25.

   The second set was another back-and-forth affair with neither team leading by more than two points. With the score tied at 24-24, Renaissance served out the game to net a 26-24 win and tie the match at 1-1.

 

   Renaissance pulled away from a 20-20 tie in the third set to win 25-21 as senior Alexus Everett had two kills to close the game and give the Phoenix a 2-1 lead.

   The Phoenix raced to a 11-2 lead in the fourth set only see the Technicians rally to tie the score at 12-12. The score was tied six more times in the match, the last time at 22-22. The Phoenix pulled away at the end for a 25-23 win and the match. Everett had eight kills in the final game and 17 overall.

   Renaissance opens the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 1, District 27 playoffs on Nov. 4 against Warren Fitzgerald.
